Vitalik Buterin becomes a billionaire as the Ether (ETH) exceeds $3000

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum (ETH) has officially become a crypto billionaire after Ether rose above $3,000. Looking at his main address on Etherscan, he owns about 333,500 ETH or about $1 billion at the current price. Vitalik Buterin also holds 5460 Maker (MKR) worth $2.8 million on a secondary.
In addition, he reportedly receives an annual salary of about 137,000 Swiss francs (127,000 euros) from the Ethereum Foundation. The Russian-Canadian genius also revealed “significant stakes” in 2 companies namely Clearmatics and Starkware.
At just 27 years old, Vitalik Buterin is reportedly the youngest billionaire in the cryptocurrency industry. Despite his immense wealth, Buterin’s largest portfolio is only the 22nd most valuable on the network, according to Etherscan data.
Meanwhile, the Ethereum Foundation, the Swiss-based nonprofit organization that organizes and funds the network’s development owns 430,140 ETH or about $1.36 billion.
What does he do with his wealth?
Vitalik Buterin himself participates in the staking of Ethereum 2.0. In November 2020, he had sent 3200 ETH or about $1.4 million to the deposit contract. The address “VB2” had sent 100 transactions of 32 ethers.
Recently, he also donated 100 ETH and 100 MKR to help India in the grip of a covid-19 outbreak. But Vitalik Buterin has not always been rolling in money. Indeed, he had sold half of his bitcoins (BTC) in 2013 to avoid being “ruined”. He had stated:
“Seven years ago, before Ethereum even started, I only had a few thousand dollars in assets. I sold half of my BTC to make sure I wouldn’t be ruined if Bitcoin went to zero. “
The last time Vitalik Buterin sold ethers was in August 2020, when he sold 13,333 ETH for $5.2 million at the time, the price was just under $390.
